Spicy and Tingly Beef Noodles in Soup
This little hole in the wall brought back memories of the trip my friend Anna and I took through China, when we stopped in Xi’an and wandered through the Muslim quarter near the Great Mosque and discovered a street full of vendors selling cheap bowls of spicy noodles. It was one of our favorite meals, for the flavors and the price.
Xi’an Famous Foods isn’t nearly as cheap, of course, but the flavor profile is very similar, with a unique mix of spices that isn’t really found in any other cuisine. The noodles are freshly made: hand-pulled and hand-cut with a slightly chewy consistency. And just so you know this is *authentic* Chinese food, they don’t skimp on the oil.
The tiger vegetables salad may have been my favorite dish – it had just the right mix of crunch and spice, dressed in something vinegary that excited all different taste buds in my mouth. I also liked the lamb buns, which at $2 were the best deal of the day.
Come winter, I can see myself craving some of these spicy concoctions to warm myself up.
