Adding to the cupcake frenzy in New York City, this shop offers do-it-yourself combinations of cake and frosting. Pick a vanilla, chocolate, or banana cupcake base and add your favorite frosting – there are lots of flavors to choose from, such as peanut butter, caramel, espresso, strawberry, maple-pecan, and grapefruit ginger. The chocolate/pistachio combo was the server’s favorite, so of course we had to try that. And we had to get a banana cupcake with cream cheese frosting after our memorable encounter with Hello Cupcake’s version of the delicious combination. Letting the customer choose the combo is a great idea, but I thought the cake was a little on the dry side, and the frosting was very sugary. But it was a pretty good ratio of frosting to cake – not too heavy on the frosting.
