Fresh Clam Pizza with White Sauce
My friend and I made a pit stop in New Haven on the way to Boston to sample some of the famous pizza from Frank Pepe’s, which is celebrating its 85th anniversary this year. Chatting with some local residents standing in line in front of us, we were informed that the pizza was definitely worth the wait. Worth traveling 75 miles? Well, at the risk of offending some die-hard fans, I’d say it was a really solid pizza, but the only problem was it was a little too salty. We ordered this fresh clam with white sauce pizza (like linguine with clam sauce but on a pizza) and their seasonal Fresh Tomato Pie, which had mozzarella, tomatoes, fresh garlic and basil. I really liked the clam pizza – it was garlicky, loaded with clams, and tasted like fresh clams – much better than the clam pizza from Delfina in San Francisco. The fresh tomato pie looked amazing – almost everyone at the restaurant had this pie on their table – but I think it could have used more basil to brighten up the flavors. I still would recommend trying it out if you’re in the area. I would say that traveling 75 miles to eat at Frank Pepe’s is MUCH more worth the effort than waiting an hour to get into Grimaldi’s in Brooklyn….
