If you’re craving gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches after watching renowned chefs duke it out with their own interpretations (dates and feta cheese, pear, pine nuts and goat cheese, etc.) on Top Chef Masters this season, The American Grilled Cheese Kitchen has come to your rescue ! Opened at the end of May 2010 by seven-time Grilled Cheese Invitational Champion Heidi Gibson and co-owner Nate Pollak, this new restaurant located in San Francisco offers 7 delectable versions of the traditional cheese sandwich, with more to come. Be sure to get there early to get your top pick – we arrived around 1:30 pm and they had just sold out of the “Piglet”, followed soon after by the “Mousetrap”… and by time we reached the counter, only one “Mushroom Gruyere” remained. A few minutes after we departed with our bag of goodness, the shop was completely sold out. Lucky us. Lucky me – I got to sample four different kinds, and my favorites were the “Mushroom Gruyere” and the “Jalapeno Popper”. Thinly sliced yukon gold potatoes layered with finely chopped mushrooms = genius.
