Maltagliati with Pork Sausage and Kale

I found this restaurant on SFGate’s list of the Top 100 Bay Area Restaurants and saw that it was a James Beard Foundation nominee for best restaurant to open in 2009, so I definitely wanted to try it while I was in CA. My family headed there around 6pm without a reservation and were told that it would be about an hour wait, since all tables were filled upon opening at 5:30. Mind you, this was 6pm on a Tuesday night! We waited patiently, because the menu looked too good to pass up. The hostess was extremely gracious and brought us glasses of water and checked in with us regularly, so even though we ended up waiting more than an hour, we were still in good spirits.
Just to give you an idea of how amazing this meal was, I’ll share some quotes with you.
My dad: “This is the best chicken I’ve ever had in my life.”
My sister: “This is one of the best meals I’ve ever had in my life.”
Every dish was prepared impeccably, but our favorites included my dad’s tender young chicken al mattone, the carbonara pizza with bacon, hen of the woods mushrooms, and egg emulsion, and the maltagliati with pork sausage and kale. This pasta dish definitely gives Babbo’s pappardelle bolognese a run for its money. Plus it had kale in it, which make you think, yeah, it’s healthy, it’s got vegetables! Now who can complain about that?
