Solomos - grilled salmon fillet with lemon potato puree & tomato ouzo sauce

Ever since I saw ‘Big Daddy’ savoring the lamb meatballs from this restaurant in Palo Alto on Food Network’s ‘The Best Thing I Ever Ate’, I’d been dying to eat here. Finally, while in the Bay Area, I managed to squeeze in a visit with some friends. Unfortunately, the Soutzoukakia (grilled lamb meatballs with tomato & green olive compote) did not live up to the hype for me. I don’t know if it’s because we got there at 5:30 when the restaurant opened for dinner and the lamb meatballs were left over from lunch, but they were disappointingly dry. The good thing is, the rest of the meal more than made up for it. My grilled salmon was cooked perfectly – slightly crisp on the outside, tender on the inside. And the tomato sauce! Oh, the tomato ouzo sauce was heavenly – rich, thick, with deep tomato flavors. I could have eaten a bowl of the sauce with bread and been a happy camper. The other fish of the day, a grilled whole branzino, was also a winner. While the restaurant is famous for its lamb, I would definitely recommend giving the fish a shot.
