Chez Panisse

Strawberry Shortcake
My very first visit to Chez Panisse, the original California cuisine restaurant in Berkeley by Alice Waters, the Queen Crusader for local and sustainable ingredients. We had dinner in the cafe upstairs, which I think I prefer over the dining room downstairs just because it’s more casual. (I wouldn’t say NO to dinner downstairs, though!) One pleasant surprise was the pizzetta with fennel and bottarga di muggine (grey mullet roe) appetizer, which was accidentally served to us. That may have been the most flavorful savory dish of the night. The amazing meal ended on a perfect note, this divine strawberry shortcake. Every spoonful had the perfect amount of sweet, macerated strawberries, buttery shortcake soaked with berry juice, and a dollop of crème fraîche.
